St. Sebastian
Church of the Franciscans, San Candido / Innichen, Italy
Most images have St. Sebastian tied to a tree nearly naked and pierced by arrows. This more demure version has him in the uniform of the Roman soldier that he was and holding the arrows in his left hand.
He also holds a staff. After Sebastian survived the arrows, the Golden Legend says the emperor ordered that the saint be beaten to death with cudgels (eum fustigari jussit). In the Early South English Legendary he is beaten by "staves" (p. 180, line 78), and in Caxton's translation by "stones."
The statue is on the left side of the main altar of the church, paired with St. Roch on the right side. Each saint was invoked against the plague.
